FAQs:

What’s a Certified Beer Server?

According to the Cicerone® Certification Program – the certification body for beer professionals – Certified Beer Server is the “first-level certification for those who work with beer”.

The Certified Beer Server exam is an opportunity to “demonstrate your mastery of the fundamentals of beer service, styles and flavour.”  The exam involves 60 multiple choice questions and can be taken online from anywhere in the world for $69.

(Please note: the cost of the exam is not included in the Virtual Beer School course cost.)

What does the Certified Beer Server exam cover?

The exam covers the fundamentals of beer flavour and evaluation, beer ingredients, beer styles, and how to best store and serve beer.

There are several different syllabi available (US, UK, International, etc.). As we will have attendees from several different countries, we will be using the International Syllabus as our guide.

All topics will be covered, however, they will not be covered in the order of the syllabus. Find a weekly breakdown of the topics to be covered in Virtual Beer School here.

How will the online prep course work?

Each week, Natalya will lead a weekly live, interactive online session covering a different subject area from the Certified Beer Server exam syllabus.

Prior to each weekly session, relevant pre-reading will be sent out to all attendees. The first hour of the live session will be a lesson led by Natalya, followed by half an hour of questions and discussion with all attendees.

After 12 weekly sessions, attendees will be prepared to take the Certified Beer Server exam, if interested.

Virtual Beer School will be hosted online via Zoom. All attendees must register to receive the Zoom link for each weekly live session.

Who is this course for?

This course is open to attendees from around the world at any level of beer knowledge.

Attendees are welcome to sign up for Virtual Beer School to build up their beer knowledge without an interest in taking the Certified Beer Server exam.

Who will lead the course?

Virtual Beer School will be led by Natalya Watson, Beer Sommelier and Advanced Cicerone®.

During lockdown, Natalya began hosting free weekly online educational sessions on a variety of beer-themed topics, crowd-sourced from attendees.

The idea for Virtual Beer School then developed from there, as a more formal, paid-for offering to prepare interested attendees to take the Certified Beer Sever exam so they can demonstrate their knowledge of beer.

How many people can attend the course?

Course attendance will be capped at 50 people, in order to better facilitate discussion.

When attendees of Natalya’s lockdown beer sessions were surveyed, while most attendees were there for the lesson, many also said the time for discussion with other participants is what kept them coming back, as they learned a lot from each other’s questions and comments, too.

Therefore, having time for discussion is an important part of the course.

How much will the online prep course cost?

The sessions will cost £25/month or £75 for the total course, if you’d like to pay in full up front.

What happens if I miss a week?

The audio from each weekly live session will be recorded and shared with you. You can also contact Natalya directly with any questions on the topic you missed.

What if I want to take the course, but can’t make the live sessions (due to work, time difference, etc.)?

If you are unable to join live, the audio from each weekly live session will be recorded and can be accessed for £10/month (or £30 for the full course). You will still be sent the weekly pre-reading and can get in touch with any course questions. Please contact Natalya to learn more about this option.
